INQUIRE
LAS 101 was a very unique course that I was not expecting to come into UIUC. However, it has proven to be a very fun, interactive, and wholesome class that does its job of being an LAS orientation correctly. Although I believe there was a bit of busy work, most of the homework is manageable and the quizzes are well made. I believe that the course did a great job in introducing RSO’s, opportunities, and fun things to do on campus. I came into LAS 101 with a couple questions on friendship and healthcare, both of which have been answered. In addition, I was challenged to step outside of my comfort zone and go check out random things on campus. What I liked most about this course was that as well as the amazing plethora of students that I got to meet. I learned about a lot of different majors and the class itself was one of the most diverse I’ve seen.
ENGAGE
In these few weeks I have gone to a lot of events and RSO’s! Most of the RSO’s that I am currently in are project-based, meaning I am on a team and we work to finish a project by the end of the semester and year. Some of these include MedLaunch, Neurotech, Illinois Design Challenge, Design for America, Psychology Survey Club, and Game Builders. I like project based clubs since it's easier to make friends within a smaller group of people + I get something to put on my resume. I am also a part of WCS, Horticulture club, and Film Score Orchestra. These are the clubs I mainly do for social benefit. For WCS, I just attended Code Ada with 2 friends and we made a web-game. It was very interesting but made me very tired. A Horticulture club is a club that I pick and choose which meetings I want to go to. So far, I’ve gone to their free-dorm plant giveaway, free-pumpkin-painting session, and apple picking social.

Illini Action Plan

💸

Passive Income

Whether its trading stocks, tutoring, or becoming a research subject, I want to find some side gig that gets me passive income. I tried to trade stocks before and I never went anywhere with it cause I didn't lock in. So, I am putting it on my plan to lock in.

  • Try to get an A in my CS classes (future tutoring)
  • Learn personal finance skills
  • Join a finance-specific student organization next semester
  • Apply to be a test subject
📈

Maintain >3.7 gpa

Maining above a 3.7 gpa allows me to have a lot of opportunities. For example, I could apply to become a James Scholar, I would look good in applications for research, and it would be wise to maintain a high gpa in case I go to grad school.

  • Plan future courses with advisor. Make sure not too difficult.
  • Talk to my professors
  • Make study plans
  • Use focus-friends to study
🎯

Get an internship

As a CS+Philosophy major, I need to get a tech internship! People who hire for CS care about experience more than anything else. I am willing to get an unpaid internship if it means gaining experience.

  • Mass apply on handshake
  • Secure full-time position before graduation
  • Build professional portfolio website
  • Establish mentorship relationships

Journey Reflection

🌟

Overall, my time at UIUC has been fun and I've learned a decent amoutn since I've stepped foot on this campus. I hope that by the end of this year I will be someone that current me will be proud of. So far, I've provided myself the opportunities that I hope to dedicate myself to for the rest of freshman year and hopefully my all 4 years.

Key Takeaways

  • Do things I'm afraid to do
  • Eat fruit and stay healthy
  • Build authentic connections with people
  • Stay curious
